iPhoneography Gallery and A Rant

August 14, 2012  •  1 Comment

I've been doing a lot of tweaking to the photos on the site, and today, I finished setting up my iPhoneography gallery. I had originally started by putting up a gallery through Instacanvas last night. This morning, I had to take it down. I was sad to do so, because it's a really great concept. The idea is that your Instagram feed is linked to your Instacanvas gallery. People can choose to buy the photos as canvas gallery wraps, and you get 20% of the sale. There's even an option to automagically post a comment to Instagram advertising your gallery, every time you post a pic to Instagram. So much potential. I was so psyched! But there are two things that ultimately made me take down the gallery:

  1. The site claims that artists shouldn't have to worry about copyright protection, because the photos come from Instagram. Well, that's fin and dandy, except that if you click on any of my photos on Instacanvas, you can download it. Just like that. Wut. The. Fack.
  2. To protect my intellectual property, I watermark all of my Instagram photos. Which means that when you buy the photos from Instacanvas, they are watermarked. Which probably doesn't tickle everyone's fancy, as my husband pointed out (damn...I hate it when you're right).

I ultimately ended up deciding to just host the photos on my own Web site. I host my photos using Zenfolio (love you guys, BTW), and they allow me to do the following:

  1. Sell my photos online (as canvas wraps and other products) through partnered photo labs
  2. Set my prices (to a certain extent)
  3. Watermark my photos
  4. Ship the final product WITHOUT a watermark (that's default, actually)

Plus it's directly linked to my site, as it's just one of my galleries. I feel kind of bad though, because I really do like the Instacanvas concept. And it would've been nice to have the extra online presence, especially since I have a decent Instagram following of daily likes to my photos. Hopefully Instacanvas will fix their model, because if they do, I will totally set up my gallery again.

For now, check out my iPhoneography gallery here: http://www.umlaphoto.com/iphonoegraphy. Enjoy!

I took a look at your website. Loved the photos! I thought your scenery/still life photos were very well framed and interesting and I liked how you captured the personalities of the people in your family shoots.
