Third One's a Charm: An Afternoon Photo Session in Richmond Hill

September 23, 2012  •  Leave a Comment

I have been photographing members of the L family for a while. Two years ago, I photographed youngest daughter, Michelle at an event. She had just turned one.
And here’s last year’s picture of Michelle, dressed up as a bumblebee.
IMG_7275 In fact, this was part of a photoshoot that I did of the whole L family in October 2011. Since it was just a few days before Halloween, mom Jenn had the awesome idea of dressing the girls up in their costumes as they strolled around in a local park in Richmond Hill for their photoshoot.

And then there’s this year’s shot of Michelle. She is made for the camera.
This shot was actually part of a maternity shoot that I did for the L family. It was such a privilege to photograph them yet again! This time, the L family was expecting a new addition in August, and mommy Jenn wanted some maternity pictures. I was more than happy to oblige.

The photoshoot was originally supposed to take place at a local splashpad. Unfortunately, Mother Nature wasn’t too co-operative that day. It was cool and rainy. By the time I arrived at their house, the rain had subsided, but since we weren’t sure if it was going to rain again, we collectively decided to hold the photoshoot at their house, taking shots both inside and outside.

The photoshoot was lots of fun. One of the things that I wanted to be sure to capture in this shoot was the love between Jenn and hubby Justin. So while the girls played in the backyard, I took some couple-only shots. Understandably, they were a bit shy about it at first. Who wouldn't be, with a camera pointed at them? So I just did what I always do - took lots of photos! Eventually they got comfortable, and then I got the shot I wanted! Have a looksie:
And of course, besides the fun couple shots, I I really wanted to capture the playfulness of the girls. I’ve mentioned many times that my style is very natural; very day-in-the-life. I’m not a big fan of poses. Of course, families do like posed shots, so I will of course oblige. But I do add my own twist. I think that this family shot says it all. What I love about this shot is that it’s totally not a traditional family portrait. Yes, it's "posed", but more than that, it's casual. It represents a moment in time. Which to me is way cooler than *just* a pose.
Here’s another family shot. I took this one with my fisheye lens. I absolutely love the fisheye effect, and I do try to take a few fisheye shots whenever I can. It’s such a fun way to look at the world, and a great way to portray a fun family shot:
And finally, I'll leave you with this shot. I love it because it's such a tender moment that's shared between Sarah and the baby. (She was singing to the baby.)

Baby Vincent was born a couple of weeks after these photos were taken. This photoshoot was so much fun, and I am very much looking forward to photographing the L family again.
